If you live in Malaga or Marbella you'll have noticed the limescale on the taps, the white marks on the shower screen and that hint of chlorine in the tap water. It's normal: the Costa del Sol's water is drinkable and safe, but hard. Let's look at why, and what you can do.

Why does the Costa del Sol's water have so much limescale?

Water hardness depends on the terrain it passes through. In much of the province of Malaga the water picks up a lot of calcium and magnesium, and that's what we call "limescale". It's not dangerous for your health, but it is annoying: it builds up in pipes and appliances and spoils the taste.

And the chlorine taste?

Chlorine is added to disinfect the water so it reaches your home safely. It's essential, but in some areas and at some times of year you notice it more when drinking. The good news: it's easy to remove.

What you can do

  • For drinking and cooking: a reverse osmosis system removes limescale, chlorine and other impurities at the kitchen tap.
  • For the whole house: a water softener reduces the hardness of the water entering the home and protects the installation.
